MATRIC REWRITE

The matric rewrite, officially part of the Second Chance Matric Programme of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), offers an opportunity for individuals to improve their National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) results.

Eligibility Requirements

You may qualify for a matric rewrite if you meet the following conditions, depending on your age and the specific programme you choose:
  • You have already written your matric exams (NSC or SC) but did not pass or wish to improve specific subject results.
  • You are younger than 21 years old for standard NSC supplementary exams.
  • You are 18 years or older for the Senior Certificate (amended) examinations (often referred to as Adult Matric).
  • You missed an exam due to a valid reason such as illness or a family death, with supporting documentation.
  • Your School-Based Assessment (SBA) marks are valid (typically for 3 to 5 years), meaning you only need to rewrite the final external exam.

Programme Options

The main programme offered by the government is the Second Chance Programme, which provides various support options:
  • Supplementary Exams (March): For school-based learners who need to complete their certificate requirements shortly after the November exams.
  • May/June Exams: For part-time NSC candidates and Senior Certificate (amended) candidates.
  • October/November Exams: For part-time NSC candidates who want to rewrite subjects to improve results.
  • Support: The programme offers face-to-face classes at designated centres, online learning materials, and access to past exam papers and study guides.
